Inspirational Quotes & Stories: Relationships - Family

Brother, I know you question your relationship with your parents. So let me simply say this: I was with you when you chose your parents. I was with you when you chose to be reborn into the world of illusions in order to remember that there is no such thing. Your parents were and are your perfect choice to assist you in remembering that this world is an illusion. Your parents were, are, and will be the perfect choice to assist you in remembering your perfection.

My friend Mike has a four-month-old daughter with a woman from Costa Rica. They are not married and he's had trouble seeing his daughter. Mike was upset about the situation. Some time ago, we went to Costa Rica after visiting Cuba and Mike found out that his sister had called both the mother of his child and the child's grandmother to tell them how badly they had been treating Mike with regard to the baby. Apparently, Mike's sister had angrily expressed the way she felt about them and the situation. Obviously, this action did not make the situation better. Both women told Mike how his sister acted which made Mike mad at his sister. He was so upset that he was planning to cancel his visit with his sister once he got to Miami for his birthday.

In handling the incident, Mike had two choices. One, he could allow the ego-self to dictate the situation, and react with anger, judgment and condemnation, thus separating himself from his sister. Two, he could recognize that his ego-self would try to answer first and pause. Mike could then bypass this effort by his ego and go to his Godself for guidance. If Mike makes the latter choice, he would see that the Godself would always ask him to act with compassion. In return he would receive peace.

Many people still find some kind of comfort and safety in blaming their parents for how they feel about themselves. Even as adults, they blame their parents for self-esteem issues. Understand that it was not what your parents did to you, but how you chose to carry the past that affects you now. My friend, you might now find it difficult to believe, but some day you will completely forgive and love your parents. In your perception, your parents may have acted in ways you once believed impossible to forgive and love. But as you grow, you will begin to understand the lessons that came to you as a result of this behavior. With understanding comes peace, and with peace comes gratitude. With gratitude your heart opens, and you will grow spiritually by learning to forgive behaviors you once found unforgivable, and love those you once thought as unlovable.

I remember as a very young child, driving with my mother in Caracas, Venezuela. Sooner or later, someone would cut her off, or something would happen on the road that she simply did not agree with. Her response was typically a negative comment regarding the other driver's skills. I remember hearing my mother say things she would never say outside the car. Needless to say, the first time I really remember arguing with my mother was in the car. She complained about someone's driving and I immediately came to that person's defense and explained to my mother what she could have done to avoid the situation. Let's just say that taking criticism about her driving skills from a seven-year-old child did not win me any brownie points! On the other hand, she was happy because she thought that it was only a matter of time before I would become a successful defense attorney. So on and on it went. My mother complained, I defended the other drivers, she came back at me telling me why I was wrong, and I offered driving advice on how she might avoid such situations in the future. She would say that I should be defending her and not the other driver whom I did not even know. Anyway, on and on it went, drive after drive, until one day I got so tired of the whole game that I figured it would be best for me to just fall asleep, or just keep my opinions to myself.
